A camera crew from Boston Catholic Television (BCTV) came to Bedford in 1997 to make a short video for their “Church of the Week” program. A copy of the videotape was obtained and, from that, these images were extracted.

Built in 1960, our church was remodelled soon after. Following Vatican Council II a curved wall and a table replaced the original altar; the communion rail and religious paintings were removed; the tabernacle was moved to one side; and the Stations of the Cross were remounted out of sight. A vestige of the original appearance is the statue of Saint Michael the Archangel on guard over the old tabernacle location.

Our eight-foot Saint Michael statue is carved of European Linden wood, with copper wings, sword and shield. Each feather in the wings is hand crafted and polished. The sculptor was Mr. Robert Winthrop White of Long Island, whose work is well known. He also carved our four-foot statues of the Blessed Virgin Mary with the child Jesus, and Saint Joseph. They are carved of solid Walnut. All three statues were donated to the parish by the sculptor's aunt, Mrs. Hester Pickman, a parishioner, since deceased.

An icon of Saint Joan of Arc and the Archangel Michael, donated by another parishioner, is located on the south wall of the church, in the baptistry area. Mounted nearby are French and English versions of the Litany of Saint Joan.

The benches in the church are of natural birch wood. Along the side aisles are Stations of the Cross designed by a Belgian artist, Suzanne Nicholas, under the direction of the Botolph Group of Boston. Other examples of her artistry may be seen at Saint Joseph Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts.

The Church of the Week video from which these pictures were taken was produced by BCTV and narrated by our pastor, Father Mark S. Sheehan. The parish hopes that you've enjoyed this tour and invites you to visit our church in person.
